Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometer (ICP-MS)

Trade name
iCAP RQ (C2)
Technical description

Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer model iCAP RQ (C2) with collision/reaction chamber (Thermo Scientific).

A choice of three inserts allow the user to balance the needs of matrix resistance against absolute sensitivity: "robust" for the analysis of samples with a complex matrix, "high matrix" for routine samples (e.g. water), "high sensitivity" for measurements requiring high sensitivity.

The Right Angluar Positive Ion Deflection (‘RAPID’) lens is a unique 90° cylindrical ion lens providing high ion transmission across the entire mass range. The iCAP RQ ICP-MS spectrometer measures all analytes and efficiently removes interference in a single He-Kinetic Energy Discrimination (He KED) mode. It also gives the possibility to use reactive gases for demanding applications.

Research capabilities

ICP-MS is a high sensitive, multi-elemental, accurate and fast technique that is widely used in environmental analysis. It allows to measure the concentration of almost all elements in aqueous solutions. The analysis of solid samples requires their prior preparation, e.g. by microwave digestion.

Measurement capabilities

Depending on the element being analysed and the matrix of the sample, it is possible to measure concentrations of the order of ng/L. Routinely, the limits of quantification range from a few hundred ng/L to a few µg/L. Details can be found in the scope of accreditation for testing laboratory no. AB 1050.
