Rock-Eval 7S analyser
Technical description

The Rock-Eval 7S pyrolytic apparatus is part of an organic matter research system: Rock-Eval 7S pyrolytic apparatus completed with a polarizing microscope unit for studies in reflected light, equipped with a photometer for reflectance measurements.

The apparatus is equipped with two ovens: pyrolytic and oxidation. For analysis, a ground rock sample (grain size below 0.2 mm) of 50-70 mg is used, which is placed in a special crucible made of Al2O3. Analysis in the pyrolytic oven (under a nitrogen atmosphere) can be carried out in the temperature range of 40-850 oC with a wide possibility of programming the temperature cycle in terms of: the initial temperature and its holding time, the rate of temperature rise (from 0.1 to 50 oC /min) and the final temperature and its holding time. Up to five independent temperature ramps and isothermal heating times can be programmed during a single run. Hydrocarbon (HC) released is determined on a flame ionization detector (FID), CO2 and CO are determined on an infrared (IR) detector, and sulfur compounds, after combustion in an oxidation furnace (temperature 850 oC), are determined as SO2 on a UV detector.

Analysis in the oxidation oven (up to a temperature of 850℃ in an air atmosphere, above - in a nitrogen atmosphere) can be carried out in the temperature range of 200-1200 oC with a wide range of programmable temperature cycles in terms of: initial temperature and holding time, temperature ramp-up rate (from 0.1 to 50 oC/min) and final temperature and holding time. The products of combustion and decomposition - CO and CO2 are transferred to the IR detector, and SO2 is transferred to the UV detector for quantification. Other oxidation products are not determined.

Research capabilities

The Rock-Eval 7S apparatus enables designation in solid samples i.a., total organic carbon (TOC), mineral carbon (MINC); S contents: organic (TOS), pyrite (Fe S) and total (TS), determination of genetic type and thermal maturity of organic matter and determination of amount and fractional composition of hydrocarbon pollutants in soil. The Rock-Eval method is designed for analysis of rocks, soils, sediments and wastes containing organic material and non-volatile petrochemical products.
