Melt spinning rapid solidification device

Trade name
Melt Spinner HV, EDMUND BUEHLER GmbH company
Technical description

The device is used for casting a stream of liquid metal melted by induction onto a rotating copper drum. It allows the production of metallic materials with an amorphous structure (metallic glasses) or rapidly cooled metal alloys in the form of strips. The device has a copper drum with a diameter of 250 mm and is equipped with a high-frequency generator with a power of 12 kW. The device enables casting of thin strips in a vacuum or at reduced pressure using a set of rotary and turbo-molecular pumps. The temperature of the cast metal is controlled by a pyrometer. Typically used crucibles are made of quartz, graphite, or boron nitride.

Basic device parameters:

  • Maximum linear speed: 60 m/s
  • Achievable vacuum: 6-10 mbar
  • Maximum charge weight: 60 g
  • Generator power: 12 kW
  • Temperature measurement range: 900-3000°C
  • Typical strip dimensions: Thickness 20-100 µm, Width: 1-25 mm
